The History and Achievements of the Health Associates Cricket Club
From Humble Beginnings to Island Cricket Prowess
The Club's Logo
The cricket club's logo is a captivating emblem based on the mythical Caladrius Bird, which is believed to possess healing powers by drawing sickness into itself and then flying towards the sun where the disease is burned up and destroyed. The Isle of Wight is depicted as a shield adorned with anchors, watched over by two unicorns, with the Caladrius Birds surrounding the sun.
Formation and Early Years
The Health Associates Cricket Club was formed approximately 35 years ago, starting with just a few matches. Over the years, it has grown to host an average of 25 matches each summer. The driving forces during the early years were Dr. Ted Mucklow and Dr. David Hide, both of whom are now sadly no longer with us, but their spirits remain and have been integral to the club's growth and establishment within the Island Cricket scene.
Diverse Player Base
Over the last 20 years, the Health Associates has seen participation from 60 different players. While a significant number of these players are from the Isle of Wight, the club has also welcomed players from various countries including Bangladesh, Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, India, Pakistan, Jamaica, and Sri Lanka. This diversity has enriched the club's culture and competitive spirit.
Home Ground
The home matches are held at the old Whitecroft Hospital Sports Ground. This ground was maintained by the NHS until the hospital's closure in 1996, after which the ground was put up for sale. The club seized this opportunity, and with secured funding, purchased the sports ground in 1997. This acquisition has provided a stable and well-maintained venue for the club's activities.
Achievements and Reputation
Today, the Health Associates Cricket Club enjoys a sound reputation for its play. The club has also embarked on tours to Dorset and has welcomed touring sides over the years, enhancing regular play throughout the summer months. Additionally, participation in the Island Winter League with matches taking place over the winter months are a testament to their enduring excellence.
The story of the Health Associates Cricket Club is one of resilience, growth, and community. From its humble beginnings to its current stature, the club continues to thrive and contribute to the vibrant cricket scene on the Isle of Wight.
